Szennai Skanzen

Located only 8 km from Kaposvár, the Europa Nostra Award-winning Szennai Skanzen offers a beautiful natural environment, the experience of meeting the past and a variety of activities. Opened in 1978, the open-air ethnographic museum is a unique creation in the middle of a living village. Its basic aim is to present and preserve the diverse folk culture of the Zselic and Inner-Somogy region, its rich material and spiritual heritage. Through its events, educational activities and living museum sites, it provides practical knowledge that anyone can use to shape and improve their immediate environment. One of the most beautiful monuments of the county, the Reformed church with a painted coffered ceiling, built in 1785, is located in the area of the Szenna Skanzen and still plays an active role in the life of the village.

„Forest in the city” - House of Forests Visitor Centre

The House of Forests Visitor Centre, operated by SEFAG Zrt., located in the centre of Kaposvár, brings the forest treasures of Somogyland closer to those who love and use the natural environment and those interested in the forest and its wildlife.

The forestry company has transformed the old forestry building on Bajcsy-Zs. street, a historical monument, into a demonstration and activity space where children of kindergarten and school age, families, tourists and other interested people can wander through the „forest's secrets”.

Meanwhile, young and old alike can learn about forest wildlife, forestry and hunting through interactive games and information panels, as well as exciting and useful activities, presentations and digital learning materials.

The thematic programs based on children's school studies and related to the forest community are free of charge for groups of pre-school and school children - by appointment - in the activity room, where almost 50 different puzzles, rolling and board games are available (82/505-176, info@somogyierdokhaza.hu ).

The 230 m2 exhibition with interactive tables, hands-on field tables, sensory experience rooms, insect and bird models is open to children, adults, families, professional, pensioner and civil associations, friends, tourists, nature lovers for a reduced/discounted entrance fee.

The visitor centre is open from 9am to 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 9am to 5pm on weekdays, Tuesday to Thursday. Monday is a public holiday. Guided tours of the exhibition space are available on request.

We are waiting for our dear guests with the friendship of a forester!

Zselici Star Park

Mysterious universe - amazing nature

In the observatory of the Zselic Astronomical Park, located in the heart of the Zselic Forest, you can visit the astronomical and natural exhibitions, the telescope dome and the planetarium. The 40-centimetre diameter mirror telescope in the dome allows you to admire the hidden treasures of the sky at night, such as the planets of the solar system, their rings and moons, star clusters and galaxies in detail. During the day, the active surface of the Sun, our life-bearing star, can be explored with the special solar telescope. Night-time programs will show you objects that can only be seen through telescopes (e.g. star clusters, galaxies), but you can also observe the constellations, the Milky Way and shooting stars with the naked eye from the building's dedicated terrace. In the Zselic, a 25-metre-high wooden lookout and 5 information points await tourists on foot or by bike.
The Zselic is visited by many photographers because of its excellent conditions. Many want to capture the wildlife of the forest, many want to capture the beauty of the starry sky. From cockatiels to distant galaxies, the area offers a wealth of curiosities.
The natural history exhibition presents the wildlife of the Zselic region, with a special focus on animals that are active at twilight and at night (e.g. owls, golden eagle). The main element of the astronomy exhibition is the meteorite collection. Bodies from outer space that hit the Earth's surface are of interest as artefacts that help to understand the composition of the early solar system, the formation of the Earth, and as pieces of stone and iron with an adventurous history, often with gold.
The fifty-three-seat planetarium shows full-dome (surround-sound) science films on astronomy, nature and the environment. Pre-film presentations will give a closer look at the most spectacular features of the night sky (Milky Way, constellations, planets) and the stories behind them.
Visitors can take part in day and night tours, as part of family or school programs. Day tours (2-4 km) explore the visitor centre area. The first part of the night walks, which start at sunset, is a similar tour to the day walks, which allow visitors to experience the forest wildlife and, if lucky, the sounds of the animals. Before it gets completely dark, the hikers' eyes adjust to the night-time lighting conditions, so by the time the binoculars are shown, they can safely walk the forest trails without any lights.

Szigetvár Zrínyi Castle

One of the most famous sites in Hungarian history, Szigetvár Castle has been a National Monument since 2016. It was here in 1566 that Miklós Zrínyi's handful of troops stopped Sultan Suleiman's army of hundreds of thousands in a self-sacrificing battle. Count Miklós Zrínyi, the great-grandson of the hero, wrote the Sziget Veszedelem (The Desolation of Sziget), a work that commemorates the heroic deed forever. Entering the castle gate, visitors are greeted by a large green park. The castle houses a museum exhibition, which is guided twice a day. For an interactive experience, we have a new exhibition in the renovated boiler room, Stop Suleiman!, which takes us back a few hundred years with the help of a time machine. Every day, our traditionalists will bring the 16th century to life with an attractive display of costumes and weapons, and to complete the experience, our guests will also have the opportunity to dress up in costume and hold weapons. Our family ticket offers a discount for children, and our group visitors are welcome with package offers.
